Winds and showers

NEW DELHI: A dust storm accompanied by sharp showers lashed the Capital on Friday evening bringing down the temperature considerably. The high-velocity winds uprooted trees in many areas obstructing smooth movement of traffic on important routes during the evening rush hour. According to the Meteorological Department, wind blowing at up to 80 km per hour lashed the Capital followed by showers and hailstorms at some places. At least 13.6 mm of rain was recorded.

The weatherman attributed the developments to a western disturbance over Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. A partly cloudy sky with dust storms and thunderstorms accompanied by squalls has been forecast for the next 24 hours. On Friday afternoon, the temperature hovered around 39 degrees Celsius, but plunged to 18 degrees after the showers. The day temperature in the Capital is likely to remain about 5 degrees below normal over the next few days.

Woman held with drugs

NEW DELHI: A woman who was allegedly selling "ganja" has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered 42 kg of ganja and Rs. 5.18 lakhs in cash from her.

Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch team laid a trap near Central School in Tagore Garden on Thursday. The woman, later identified as Laxmi, was arrested when she appeared on the scene around 8-15 p.m. A bag containing 8 kg ganja was allegedly recovered from her possession.

At Laxmi's instance, the police recovered another 34 kg ganja from her house in Raghubir Nagar jhuggies. The police also recovered Rs. 5.18 lakhs in cash from her house.
