MADURAI: From beautifully sculpted stone carvings to 30 varieties of Rajasthani mouth fresheners and exquisitely-carved wooden artefacts from Puri. All these will be available here for the next ten days at the `Orissa Art and Craft Mela,' organised by Kasturba Multipurpose Handicraft Society, Puri, at K.K. Nagar in Madurai. The artistic skills of craftsmen are evident from the handicrafts and handlooms on display. Also showcased are `appliques' from Orissa, an old temple art that involves cutting of fabric into various shapes. These beautiful works, which include lampshades, wall hangings, handbags and garden umbrellas, are all available in modern and traditional designs. Besides `ikkat' salwar kamees sets and duppattas, there are also sets, which are embellished with mirror work, jal work and Phulkari embroidery. Also on display are hand-made paintings and engravings in palm leaves, which reflect the rich heritage of Orissa. Customers can meet the artisans and know more about their products. The exhibition, which started on Saturday, will go on till June 28 and will remain open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. A special rebate of 20 per cent on handlooms and 10 per cent on handicrafts will be offered at the expo.
