Party says some of the announcements are `impractical' Says some of the Governor's announcements impractical

  • Says plan for free power for the poor cannot be implemented
  • Alleges political interference in the functioning of police
  • Deplores SFI decision to lead a march to district court

Thiruvananthapuram: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has termed the announcements in the Governor's Address to the Assembly on Friday as ``impractical''.

The party has said that the Governor's Address had totally ignored the 10-point programme presented by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to the Assembly and approved by both the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, BJP spokesperson B.K. Sekhar said it was unfortunate that the 10-point development programme presented by the President and that had been widely welcomed by all irrespective of the political affiliation was ignored. He said some of the announcements such as free power for the poor could not be implemented as proved by the experiences of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Sekhar said there was a perceptible change in the LDF's police as there were clear indications of political interference in the functioning of the police. He wanted to know the stand of the Government on the High Court directive for a reinvestigation in the Jayakrishnan murder case.

Mr. Sekhar deplored the SFI decision to lead a march to the district court. He said his party was not opposed to democratic agitations, but the march against the courts was not within the walls of democratic functioning. With regard to the Rajya Sabha elections, he said both the LDF and the UDF had overlooked the claims of the poorer sections belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Asked whether the party felt that the LDF Government's stand on self-financing institutions was mere continuation of the UDF Government's, he said the LDF Government was assertive, but the outcome alone would show how far its assertiveness has paid off.
