KARIMNAGAR: The Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) has launched its 39th emergency response service toll-free number 108 in Karimnagar on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police Devendra Singh Chauhan formally inaugurated the service by dialling the number from his mobile phone.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the facility would be a boon for people of Karimnagar as they can dial the number for medical, police and fire services help in the town.

Mr. Chauhan said that the police had already announced that they would not question people who bring those involved in the accident to hospitals for emergency assistance.

He also said that they would disburse transportation charges to people who rescue accident victims.

EMRI CEO Venkat Changavalli said that they had already launched the service in 38 towns of the State. Some 50 more towns would be added by this month-end. He said that they had received a total of 15 lakh calls on an average of 10,800 calls per day, including 350 emergency calls. He said that they had set a target of receiving two million calls a day and save 2 million lives by the year 2010. The response time was also reduced to only three minutes, he said, adding that efforts were on to reduce it further.

EMRI also screened a short film about its activities on the occasion.

In the evening, the service was also launched in Ramagundam industrial town.
