Welcome news

The report that Bill Gates, Chairman, Microsoft, plans to give up day-to-day responsibilities and concentrate more on the activities of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is heartening. As the richest man in the world, he can afford to be philanthropic.

We hope to see more billionaires and rich industrialists taking some time off from their work to alleviate the conditions of the poorest of the poor. Governments alone cannot complete the challenging task.

V.S. Venkatavaradan,
Salem, T.N.

By deciding to give up day-to-day work, Mr. Gates has set an example for all CEOs to emulate.

They are expected to concentrate on major policy matters not on day-to-day affairs.

I recollect my meeting with a chairman of a leading nationalised bank four decades ago. There were very few files on his table. He said he dealt only with major issues, which was why his bank was doing very well.

R. Thirunarayanan,
Chidambaram, T.N.

It is great to see the richest man in the world stepping aside to become a philanthropist. I hope the affluent in India will take the cue.

Bill Gates is not rich only in wealth but also in heart.

V. Shivaji Kumar,
Paralakhemundi, Orissa
