Alagappa University to establish centre for mathematics

CHENNAI:
The Governor as Chancellor has given approval to the Alagappa University to establish a centre for higher mathematics.
Called the Sri Ramanujam Centre for Higher Mathematics, the unit will be functional from this year and it will work for improving the quality of research and expand areas of research to suit the requirements of industry, P. Kanniappan, Vice-Chancellor of the University told presspersons here on Sunday. Apart from inviting eminent mathematicians from other organisations for guest lectures or interactions with researchers, the centre would work with other institutions such as the Chennai Mathematical Institute and the National Board for Higher Mathematics in the Department of Atomic Energy, the Vice-Chancellor said. Dr. Kanniappan said the Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and the former Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Kasturirangan had sanctioned Rs. 60 lakhs.
