IBM has launched an initiative to test the innate talents of engineering and computer science students. The final product will be made available for the Government to utilise it freely, under the banner `Great Mind Challenge.' More than 10,000 engineering and MCA students from over 250 colleges in the country will get a chance to develop software based on various project scenarios as part of the IBM's academic initiative. The contest is designed to improve software development skills as students solve issues businesses face today. Registrations will open to engineering and MCA students through a website and direct mailers to the student community. Through the contest IBM will help students develop a hands-on experience on IBM software products like WAS/WAS CE. DB2/DB2C, Wesbsphere Portal and forms, Tivoli Storage Manager and Rational and Linux OS and also help them gain the much-needed live project experience. As part of the initiative, mentors from IBM will work with the students and faculty. The programme will continue through the end of this year. Prizes for the winning projects include personal computers, iPods, and USB MP3 players among others. A repository of the top 20 projects and innovative solutions will be available free of cost to Government agencies, solution providers and academics. To facilitate recruitment of students skilled on IBM technologies, a web repository of all participating student profiles will also be made available for use of partners as well as for IBM. Details can be had from www.ibm.com.
