PONDICHERRY: Battle lines drawn for the second phase of civic poll also in the Union Territory of Pondicherry involving contest for the posts of chairmen of Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipalities and also for the councillor election in Villianoor commune panchayat with the last date for withdrawal of nominations coming to an end on Saturday. A triangular fight has emerged in Pondicherry municipal chairperson election involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam nominee Dr B. Sridevi, the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate S.Tamizhselvi and the Puduchery Munnetra Congress nominee and former Education Minister Renuka Appadurai. (The CPI had fielded its nominee earlier, but following an understanding with the Congress heading the DPA in which CPI is a constituent the CPI had kept off the polls now). The post is reserved for women general category. A seven cornered contest has emerged for post of chairman of Oulgaret Municipality and the contest involves ruling Congress candidate N.S.J. Jayapal alias Ayyanar, the CPI(M) candidate T.Murugan, the AIADMK nominee and the former legislator A.M. Krishnamoorthy, the Puduchery Munnetra congress candidate S.Bhuvaneswaran, the former Health Minister V. Pethaperumal, N. Sabith and E. Chandrasekaran (all contest as Independents). The post is earmarked for open general category without reservation. In the 18-member Villianoor commune panchayat (which also has poll in the second phase) 99 candidates are in the fray. Independents form a big chunk (48) of the total contestants in Villianoor. While the AIADMK has fielded 16 candidates the ruling Congress has deployed candidates in a dozen municipal councillor wards there. The Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipal councils and Villianoor commune panchayat would go to second phase of poll on June 27. The Villianoor block has elections for ward members in the villages and also for village panchayat presidents. These two posts would have elections on June 27 on non-party basis. (Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions would have the elections to their respective municipal councils and also for the five commune panchayats and village panchayats under their purview in Karaikal in the first phase on June 24).
