THRISSUR: The direct discussions between a section of the employees and the management of the Vanaja Textile Mills, Padukkad near here, on Sunday failed to arrive at a decision on reopening the mill, which has been lying closed for nearly three years. Managing director Maruthachalam Chettiar, joint managing director Thirunavakkarassu, several other senior officials and nearly 50 employees participated in the discussions in which the leaders of the political trade unions were not present. According to sources, the management had agreed to retain the employees who were working in the firm when it was closed down, at a reduced wage level. However, the workers demanded the retention of all the employees at the original wage level. The workers and the management could not also arrive at a mutually agreeable formula on implementing the proposal for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) for a section of the employees.
