Government for continuation of ban on SIMI

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The State Government on Saturday submitted two affidavits before the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal and sought continuation of the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

The tribunal, headed by former High Court Judge H.N. Bhagawati, held its sittings in the KAT Court hall in V.V. Towers here.

The tribunal accepted the affidavits filed by police inspectors of Roja police station in Gulbarga city and of the Bijapur police station.

In the affidavit, Sudhir Hegde of Roja police station said four persons belonging to SIMI were acquitted in 2005 of a case registered in 2001. Another case was pending against them in Surat in Maharashtra.

N.S. Patil, Inspector of Bijapur police station, said there were two cases against the same persons and there were under investigation. Both police officials said the persons were still holding secret meetings. The activities of SIMI would increase if the ban was lifted, they contended. The tribunal held sittings in Aurangabad, Kerala and Hyderabad. While an affidavit had been filed by Anti-Terrorist Squad in Aurangabad, the Crime Investigation Department of Kerala police and an official of Andhra Pradesh police had filed their affidavits.
