Sonia: replicate Rae Bareli victory

Atiq Khan

Says it will decide whether rule of law will prevail in State

  • Accuses State Government of obstructing development of Rae Bareli
  • Rahul Gandhi assures speedy development and resolution of water scarcity

Rae Bareli : Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday exhorted Congressmen to replicate the party's victory in the recent Rae Bareli byelection in next year's Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing block-level party workers of Sareni, Sataon, Dalmau, Bachhrawan and Rae Bareli Sadar Assembly segments of the Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency at the Feroze Gandhi Degree College here, she said the Assembly polls would decide whether the rule of law would prevail in the State.

The State Government had placed several obstacles in the development of Rae Bareli, she said and warned partymen that if the present dispensation remained in power then development would take a back seat.

In the last 10 to 15 years the situation in the State had worsened, but now the time had come to rewrite history.

She recounted that during her roadshow on Saturday, she was apprised of the several problems plaguing the people of the constituency, including lack of irrigation and drinking water, and unemployment. False cases were booked against Congress workers at the behest of the ruling party, she charged.

Rahul Gandhi, Amethi MP, said development activities would be speeded up in Rae Bareli and the acute water problem would be resolved soon.

During an interactive session with Ms. Gandhi, booth workers and party functionaries sought release of water into the Purwa irrigation canal. Other demands pertained to self-employment training programmes in villages and opening of an agriculture science centre.
