Higher Secondary SAY exam on June 21

Thiruvananthapuram: The Higher Secondary SAY/Improvement examination will be held at 211 centres on June 21, from 2 p.m. till 5 p.m., the Higher Secondary Director has said. Practical examinations will be conducted from June 22 till 24. Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology practical examinations will be conducted at all SAY examination centres. However, the practical exams of computer science/computer application/computer accounting will be held only at select SAY centres in each district. For Geography practical examination, there will be only one centre in each district. There will be only one examination centre in every region in the case of practical exams of rare subjects. The details of the centres for practical exams are available at all SAY centres. — Staff Reporter

CPI(M) to collect fund for Palestinian people

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M) will take up a fund collection campaign in the State on July 30 and 31 in aid of the Palestinian people, the party said in a press release here on Sunday. The party said that this campaign was in response to a call issued by its Central Committee to mobilise aid for the Palestinian people who were being targeted by the American imperialism and Israel. The party's State Committee, which met here on Saturday and Sunday, also decided to commemorate the birth centenary of its leader P. Krishna Pillai this year. — Special Correspondent

PMK plea to State Government

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: S. Ramadoss, founder president, Paatali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has requested the State Government to pass a resolution requesting the Central Government to enact the necessary legislation guaranteeing 27 per cent reservation to OBC's in higher educational institutions. Mr. Ramdoss was speaking to presspersons here on Saturday. The Government of Tamil Nadu has passed such a resolution, he said. According to Mr. Ramdoss, he has already urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh the need for giving reservation. - Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Executive Member of the Communist Marxist Party G. Sugunan on Sunday protested against the recent attack on Youth Congress workers who had demonstrated against Public Works Minister P. J. Joseph. Mr. Sugunam said that the Chief Minister's comments on the attack encouraged fascists who had launched the attack. He demanded that the attackers should be arrested and prosecuted without delay. — Special Correspondent

Selected for fellowship

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kavadiyar Ramachandran has been selected for a senior fellowship in the field of Malayalam Literature for a period of two years from June 1, 2006 by the Union Ministry of Culture. The value of the fellowship is Rs 12,000 per month. — Special Correspondent

Loan defaulter's property annexed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of Travancore and the Peroorkada village officer have taken possession of a two-storied building in 12 cents of land at Vettikonam, near here, since the owner of the property had defaulted the repayment of a Rs.25-lakh housing loan taken from the main branch of the bank in the city, the bank said in a press release. The property has been reposed with the Thiruvananthapuram District Collector under sector 14(1) of the Securitisation Act, the bank said. — Special Correspondent

Policeman found dead

THRISSUR: The body of a policeman was found hanging in his wife's house at Elthuruthu, near Kodungallur, on Sunday. According to official sources, the deceased was identified as George Francis, 45. He was attached to the police station at Puthenvelikkara in Ernakulam district. — Staff Reporter

Suseela murder case: one arrested

Thrissur: The police on Saturday arrested Prasad, 27, of Kalarikkal House at Kozukkulli Madirasi Moola in Mannuthy in connection with the Suseela murder case. The body of Suseela, 73, wife of the late Kumbalathuprambil Narayanan of Munnumuri Ombathungal in Mattathur, was found in her house on June 6. Suseela was living alone in the house. A postmortem had revealed death by smothering. Prasad is Suseela's son-in-law's nephew. He was reportedly facing financial problems. Inspector General of Police B. Sandhya said the investigation revealed that Prasad had committed the murder to take Suseela's gold ornaments. Two bangles and an earring were recovered from the accused, she said. — Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Results of the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) for clerk trade category, which was held on April 30, 2006, will be notified at the Branch Recruiting Office (BRO) in Kozhikode on Tuesday. All candidates should reach the BRO at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter

Probe ordered

Kozhikode: City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh has instructed Kasaba Circle Inspector P. Viswambharan to investigate the case in connection with the alleged sex racket at the police quarters at Mananchira here. Mr. Venkatesh said that a case had already been registered based on a preliminary report. The inquiry report mentioned that five girls had illegally stayed at the police quarters allotted to one of the constables of the Kasaba police station. Mr. Venkatesh said a woman attached to the clerical wing of the Office of the Commissioner and the constable who was allotted the police quarters had been placed under suspension . — Staff Reporter
