State Government releases Rs. 1.5 crore as endowment

BANGALORE: The Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, has set up a Ramakrishna Hegde Chair in memory of the late Chief Minister.

The State Government has released Rs. 1.5 crore as an endowment to the ISEC.

ISEC Director Gopal K. Kadekodi said the Government had cleared the proposal made by the institute to establish the Ramakrishna Hegde Chair on Decentralisation and Governance and it would become functional from this year.

The contribution of Ramakrishna Hegde to the panchayati raj system during his tenure as Chief Minister was immense.

The vision behind the Chair was to take the governance and transparency of development to the grass roots level.

Research and training

The Chair was expected to conduct research and training on the process of decentralisation, governance and accountability in welfare delivery systems at the grass roots level and come up with policy recommendations to institutionalise the panchayati raj system on a much more firmer and socially acceptable basis, he said.

The Chair could be occupied by a distinguished social scientist from any where in the world with distinction in research publications on decentralisation, governance and development.

The Chair carries a professor's salary and all other facilities as per ISEC rules, Prof. Kadekodi said.
