JAIPUR: A case has been registered against Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh at the Walled City's Manack Chowk police station here on a charge of inciting social conflicts through speeches and statements. A group of advocates, led by Kamlesh Sharma, on behalf of the Savarna Arakshan Manch, a body protesting against Mr. Singh's proposal to provide reservation to the members of the backward classes in institutions of higher learning, filed the complaint. The advocates cited the reports carrying the statements of Mr. Singh from Delhi in the local Hindi dailies as the basis for their allegation of "provoking people by playing with their sentiments," when the issue of reservation was pending before the Supreme Court. "The statements of the Minister are tantamount to inciting people to violate the orders of the Supreme Court which has ruled against any demonstrations for or against reservation," the complaint from the lawyers to the Station House Officer, Manack Chowk, said. Advocate Sharma in a statement said there was a need to check the utterances of Mr.Singh as they provoked violence. His statements also could lead to caste struggle and general discontentment and unrest, he said. Confirming the registration of the case, SHO Surendra Singh said the police had started investigating into the complaint.
