`Varuna Japam' brings heavy rain

Staff Reporter

PRAYERS GO UP: Vedic pundits performing `Varuna Japam' at Tirumala on Sunday.

TIRUPATI: The hill town of Tirumala witnessed heavy downpour on Sunday a few hours after priests started chanting hymns from scriptures as part of the `Varuna Japam' that began on the banks of Varaha Pushkarini (temple tank).

The five-day ritual, meant to propitiate the rain god to bestow copious rain and banish famine, is also aimed at appeasing the Almighty to ensure common good and world peace.

Eighteen Veda pundits of the TTD led by K. Chandrasekhara Ghanapaati took part as `rithwiks' (propitiators) in the ceremony and chanted hymns throughout the day standing in hip-deep water in the tank.

TTD Executive Officer A.P.V.N. Sarma and his wife Durga were present during the initiatory ritual, `Ankurarpanam'.

Special Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy, Deputy EO R. Prabhakar Reddy and Peishkar A. Vasudevan also took part.
