CPI's plea on

contract lecturers

HYDERABAD: The CPI State council has urged the Government to keep its orders against renewal of the contract of lecturers, in spite of putting in eight years of service, in abeyance to prevent them from losing jobs.

K. Narayana, party secretary, in a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy suggested that in view of the interviews of contract lecturers slated for June 22, the Government should keep the orders in pending. He objected to the decision not to renew their services on the basis of the pass percentage of students during 2005-06. - Special Correspondent

Two killed in

bus-auto collision

ONGOLE: Two persons died and three others sustained injuries when an autorickshaw hit an RTC bus in Chirala on Sunday.

One of the victims was identified as Thella Devi, 40. All the injured persons belong to Chirala. - Special Correspondent

Two crushed

to death

Sangareddy: Nagaram Mysaiah,48, and Neela Muthaiah, 35, of Bibipet in Domakonda mandal of Nizamabad died when the tractor-trailer they were travelling in overturned on the outskirts of Nashkal in Ramayampet mandal on Sunday. Seven others, who were travelling in it, were injured.

All the injured persons were admitted to hospital.

Bodies of couple

found in well

KHAMMAM: The police fished out the bodies of a couple from an abandoned well at Venkitia Tanda village in Chandrgonda mandal on Sunday. Jarkula Devya, 40, and his wife, Tari 35, accused by a section of villagers of indulging in sorcery, were targeted ever since an aged woman, Kali, died in the village a month ago.

Kali's sons -- Ramachander and Ravi -- allegedly hacked the couple to death and threw the bodies in the well. - Staff Reporter

Doctors blamed for

patient's death

Sangareddy: Relatives of Sardana Yesu, 20, who died due to kidney failure in the Medak local area hospital during the early hours of Sunday, refused to cremate his body and demanded action against doctors alleging negligence on their part. - Staff Reporter

Last date extended

HYDERABAD: Potti Sriramulu Telugu University has extended the last date for submission of application forms to June 30 for admission to various courses to be offered at campuses across the State.

Fatal fall

HYDERABAD: A 70-year-old woman supporter of a panchayat election candidate died on Saturday when she fell down from the tractor's trolley she was travelling in at Kandukur in Ranga Reddy district. The victim Ramulamma was among the crowd supporting a local K. Bal Reddy who was going to file his nomination for the post of MPTC member. She reportedly sat on the edge of the trolley and fell upside down when the tractor's tyres crossed a ditch. The woman with serious head injuries was rushed to the Osmania General Hospital but doctors declared her brought dead. Staff Reporter

`Iron leg' Sastri dead

HYDERABAD: Telugu film comedian G. Viswanatha Sastri,44, popularly known as `iron leg' Sastri died at his native place Tadepalligudem in West Godavari district on Sunday.

Sastri, who made his debut in `Prema Khaidi' 16 years ago, was familiar to movie buffs as a roly-poly, bumbling priest. He is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

The Andhra Pradesh Cine and TV Junior Artistes' Union, while condoling his death, appealed to the Government to financially help Sastri's family. It also appealed for aid from the film industry.-Special Correspondent

Applications for constable posts

Sangareddy: Applications for the posts of AR, Civil police constables will be put on sale from Monday at the police headquarters here.

According to a press release, the special counter will be working from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day till July 7. Completed application forms must be submitted along with a registration fee of Rs. 25 on or before July 7. - Staff Reporter

Sangareddy: Bandi Mallesham, 45, driver of a van returning from Hyderabad, died on the spot when a truck coming in the opposite direction hit it near Komuravelli Kaman at Rajiv Rahadari on Sunday. -Staff Reporter

According to a press release by the SP Manish Kumar, interested candidates could register their names at the nearest police station. Payment would be commensurate with their duties. Applications for the recruitment of APSP constables costing Rs. 10 would be issued at special counters in the SP office from Monday till July 7. Xerox copies and applications purchased outside would not be accepted. -Special Correspondent
