Heartburn caution

NEW DELHI: Women who put on extra pounds raise their risk of getting frequent heartburn or making their symptoms worse even if they are not overweight, said K.K. Aggarwal, president of Heart Care Foundation of India.

In a press statement, he said a moderate gain doubles the chances of heartburn and acid reflux, whereas shedding weight cuts the risk by about 40 per cent.

Quoting a study published in New England Journal of Medicine, Dr Aggarwal said persistent heartburn was the result of stomach acid backing up into the esophagus. "It creates a burning pain in the chest or a bitter taste in the throat or mouth," he said.

Heartburn in women also may be the first manifestation of underlying heart blockages especially if the symptom appears for the first time after the age of 45.
