Staff Correspondent

List of works under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana will be ratified by zilla panchayat

  • Mangalore taluk panchayat will hold its special general body meeting on Monday
  • Officials asked to provide information on norms of the scheme

MANGALORE: A special general body meeting of the zilla panchayat here on Friday directed all five taluk panchayats to convene meetings and submit a report on the works to be taken up in the taluks under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). They have been directed to submit a list of works to the zilla panchayat on or before June 24.

The Mangalore taluk panchayat will hold its special general body meeting on Monday, Sullia on Tuesday, Bantwal on Wednesday, Belthangady on Thursday and Puttur on Friday.

The list received from the respective taluk panchayats will be placed before the general body meeting of the zilla panchayat to be held on June 29 for ratification.

Taking note of the concerns expressed by zilla panchayat members that they did not have proper information on the norms of the scheme, panchayat president Mamatha D.S. Gatti has directed officials to convene meetings at the taluk panchayat level. She has instructed the zilla panchayat executive engineer and other taluk-level engineers to participate in these meetings.

Stating that the officials concerned usually do not brief members about norms in the implementation of a Centrally-assisted scheme, she said this must change. Most development schemes fail to take off, as officials do not provide proper information to elected representatives, who in turn cannot brief people.

A.M. Kunjappa, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, said he had given clear instructions to all assistant executive engineers at the taluk level to execute the programme after creating awareness among people. He directed the officials to hold meetings at the taluks after inviting all elected representatives.

    Presentation

    N. Narasimharaju, executive engineer of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, gave a presentation on the scheme.

He agreed to accommodate requests from members for new works under the scheme. Aziz Malar, Sundar Salian and Asha Thimappa, chairpersons of standing committees, were present.
