Knowledge is the primary production resource, says Indian Society of Technical Education president

  • People with knowledge and skill `are nation's most potent resource'
  • The job market for a good Indian student is now global
  • Graduates urged to be job creators instead of being job seekers

CHENNAI: "The sky is the limit to what you can achieve," said N. R. Shetty, president of Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) addressing graduates of SRM Deemed University at a convocation ceremony recently.

He said that in a world dominated by technology, knowledge was the primary production resource — more than capital and labour — and innovative capacity crucial. He told the graduates that they were very fortunate since there were abundant opportunities available; the job market for a good Indian student was now global. He stressed that only those individuals or countries generating knowledge, understanding, accessing and using it to satisfy human needs would prosper. Therefore people with knowledge and skill are the most potent resource of a nation, he added.

One thousand three hundred forty seven students got their degrees during the first convocation ceremony of SRM Deemed University. Others present were T.R. Pachamuthu, Chancellor SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Dr. T.P. Ganeshan, Pro Vice Chancellor of SRM and Registrar of the institution Dr. A. M. Balasubra maniam.

Dr. Shetty said that the challenge today was to impart education that was relevant and excellent. He encouraged the students to start enterprises of their own and be job-creators instead of being job seekers. "The emphasis is on passion for the profession," said Dr. Shetty and advised the students to "look beyond the narrow confines of one's discipline, embrace changes and be innovative and resourceful."

    MoUs with colleges

Mr. Pachamuthu said: "Our students have obtained 6 ranks in the University of Madras, 22 ranks in Anna University this year and 24 ranks from the deemed university." He also added that the institute had signed 19 MoUs with several international colleges. The new projects that are underway at the SRM institute are: a 16-storeyed IT block (3.2 lakh sq. ft) to be completed in ten months and another one for University Library and Administration block (7 lakh sq. ft). The SRM Deemed University has been awarded a grade of B+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
