Orientation programme on AIDS for doctors

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A workshop on HIV/AIDS was held here on Sunday as part of the Indian Medical Association's programme to provide an orientation to doctors in handling such cases.

The workshop was the first in a series of programmes planned to educate the medical fraternity on how to go about taking up treatment and giving guidance to an HIV/AIDS patient.

Organised in association with the Clinton Foundation and National AIDS Control Organisation, the workshop is intended to provide updated information on the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS, including Anti-Retroviral Treatment, said Abraham Varghese, district coordinator for the Physicians Training Initiative in the district.

A physician's guide, CD with latest information on the disease and certificate of the Medical Council of India were given to all the participants. The State IMA has taken up the programme in eight districts and plans to train 15,000 doctors by the end of the programme.

Each workshop is for six hours and doctors, who are not members of the IMA, can also participate. According to Dr. Varghese, any registered modern medicine practitioner could attend the workshop.
