Selected for fellowship

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kavadiyar Ramachandran has been selected for a senior fellowship in the field of Malayalam Literature for a period of two years from June 1, 2006 by the Union Ministry of Culture. The value of the fellowship is Rs 12,000 per month. — Special Correspondent

Loan defaulter's property annexed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of Travancore and the Peroorkada village officer have taken possession of a two-storied building in 12 cents of land at Vettikonam, near here, since the owner of the property had defaulted the repayment of a Rs.25-lakh housing loan taken from the main branch of the bank in the city, the bank said in a press release. The property has been reposed with the District Collector under sector 14(1) of the Securitisation Act, the bank said. — Special Correspondent

Youth hacked to death

Thiruvananthapuram: A 26-year-old youth, Aji (26), was hacked to death by an armed gang near Ponnara bridge in Fort police station limits around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. Another youth, Kumar (26), was seriously injured in the attack. The police were yet to identify the assailants .. — Staff Reporter

Found dead

Thiruvananthapuram: A 65-year-old man, identified as Shamshudeen of Manvila was found dead in the vicinity of a toddy shop at Kazhakuttam on Sunday morning. According to police, Shamshudeen had consumed toddy from a licensed outlet at Arasanmoodu on Saturday night. The police have registered a case of unnatural death. The Excise officials have closed the toddy outlet. — Staff Reporter

Police deployment for Youth Congress march

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have deployed about 1,200 policemen, 52 Sub Inspectors, 12 Circle Inspectors and five Assistant Commissioners for duty in connection with the Assembly march by Youth Congress activists on Monday. The police have also readied riot police, tear gas party and the water cannon to deal with any violence during the march, a press release issued by the City Police Commissioner said. — Staff Reporter
