The article "Looking at life beyond grades" (Open Page, June 18) strikes the right note for students taking the school final examinations. Parents and teachers need to inculcate in students the spirit of excellence. They should be encouraged to compete not with others, but with themselves. The emphasis should be on doing one's best irrespective of grades.

I fully agree that human life is more valuable than a certificate or a few numbers. Students should not get discouraged if they do not score high marks. It is enough to pass in examinations.
