Corrections and Clarifications

  • In "`We are trying to build an inclusive society'" (Op-Ed, June 17, 2006), an interview with M. Veerappa Moily, the question he was asked was "Does the Oversight Committee have the mandate to decide for State universities since education is a State subject?" Education is not a State subject, but a Concurrent subject. The Constitution of India, lists under List III-Concurrent List, 25., "Education, including technical education, medical education and universities; vocational and technical training of labour."

  • A reader points out that the text of "Black makes a clean sweep of IIFA awards" (June 18, 2006) — a UNI report on the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards held in Dubai last week — says that the first IIFA event was held in 2006 at the Millennium Dome in London. It is incorrect. It was in the year 2000. The IIFA awards were held in: London in 2000; Sun City (South Africa) in 2001; Genting Highlands (Malaysia) in 2002; Johannesburg in 2003; Singapore in 2004, Amsterdam in 2005; Dubai in 2006. In 2007, the venue will be Yorkshire (U.K.).

  • In "Getting Serious about power" (Editorial page, June 16, 2006), a reader says that the sentence "The Central Electricity Act provides for 100 per cent metering and billing of power supplies to all sections of consumers" is incorrect. The nomenclature of the Act is incorrect as there is only a Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The Electricity Act, 2003, provides guidelines for electricity policy formulations in the country. With the passage of this Act, the previous legislations in this regard, namely the Indian Electricity Act, 1909, the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948, and the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, 1998, stand repealed, says the reader, quoting the "India Year Book-2006" as his source.

  • A factual error. In "F.V. Arul, legendary police officer, passes away" (June 16, 2006), this former Inspector-General of Police, Tamil Nadu, was described as belonging to the 1941 batch of the then Imperial Police. A reader says that there was no service known as the Imperial Police either before or after independence. The correct name of the service was Indian Police (IP) which was a service under the Secretary of State for India. Just as the Indian Administrative Service is treated as the successor to the Indian Civil Service (ICS), the IP of pre-independence period was succeeded by the present day Indian Police Service (IPS).

  • The name of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej was misspelt in the caption of the Reuters photograph as Aduljadej in "Joy, solemnity mark Thai celebrations" ("International", June 10, 2006).

  • In "New entrance to Egmore railway station opens" (Chennai city, June 17, 2006, page 3), the Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, had said that apart from Delhi and MRTS stations in Chennai, Egmore was the only station to get escalators. A reader says that this is incorrect as Vijayawada junction (Andhra Pradesh) got escalators before Chennai's Egmore. The South Central Railway website says that the facility was commissioned in April 2000. Also, Central Railway provided an escalator at the Pune railway station in March 1997.

  • In "Zaheer Khan's career-best haul" ("Sport", June 17, 2006), a reader points out that the scorecard is wrong. It said: "Worcestershire: 650 for seven decl in 145.5 overs and 20 for one before lunch. Essex: 283 (Zaheer Khan nine for 138)". As Worcestershire, for which Zaheer is playing, forced Essex to follow on, it should have been Worcestershire: 650 for seven decl; Essex 283 and 20 for 1. The reader is right.
