Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The newly formed Federation for governance by panchayats has appealed to the Union Territory Administration to bring in legislation to ensure that women, on their election in the coming civic polls in Pondicherry, had full freedom to function without being harassed by `benamis.' A release from its spokesperson, Mr. James Churchill, said here on Monday that the Federation comprising delegates of various social service organisations, movement of the people, organisations of Dalits and Associations of Women would also hold a demonstration at Bharathi Park here on June 21 to highlight its demands. A detailed petition would be handed over to the Lt Governor and Chief Minister at the end of the demonstration. The key features of the acts relating to municipalities, commune and village panchayats, the role and responsibility of the councillors, chairmen and also functionaries of the village panchayats should be brought out in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu for easy understanding by the common man.
