KARAIKAL: Hundreds of students, parents, teachers and residents on Monday staged a hunger strike near the Collector's office here demanding that the Pondicherry Government increase the number of seats in professional colleges for students from the Karaikal region. The protest was organised by the Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG), which is fighting for separate Union Territory status for Karaikal. K. Subramaniam, a retired teacher, inaugurated the hunger strike. S.P. Selvashanmugham, KSG convener and president of Pondicherry Cauvery Delta Farmers Legal Action Committee, Karaikal, who led the hunger strike, alleged that the Pondicherry Government had been neglecting Karaikal in the field of education. He said students of the region were not getting seats in professional courses. He pointed out that even with 420 seats in the engineering colleges in the Union Territory, only 21 students from the Karaikal region were getting admission in them. He said the KSG had also urged the Government to start a Central University, medical college, engineering college and an institute to give special training for students appearing for the civil services examinations in Karaikal.
