VIJAYAWADA : Rich tributes were paid to Tollywood's `King of Comedy' the late Jandhyala on his fifth death anniversary on Monday.

Several fans and admirers of the writer-director, including actors `Subhalekha' Sudhakar and Kota Sankara Rao, along with members of Jandhyala's family, including his wife Annapurna and daughters Sahiti and Sampada, paid floral tributes to him at his bronze statue at Tummapallivari Kshetrayya Kala Kshetram.

Mr. Sudhakar, who came to the city from Chennai to participate in the commemorative meeting organised by `Kalamanjari', a cultural organisation, felt that comedy in Telugu movies was no longer alive after Jandhyala passed away.

    Pure and healthy

"My Guruvu Garu introduced pure and healthy comedy to Tollywood, which is still fresh in the minds of filmgoers. Nowadays, comedy is more slapstick and unhealthy. Maybe, Jandhyala would come back in some form to rejuvenate comedy in Telugu films," Mr. Sudhakar remarked.

Mr. Sankara Rao, in an emotion-choked voice, said he always cherished the encouragement Jandhyala had given him during his early days in film industry. "Jandhyala garu strove hard to get the best out of an artiste in a natural way," he recalled.

Members of Kalamanjari P. V. L. Narasimha Rao, B. H. Haragopal, Ch. Srinivas, B. Bhaskar, along with lawyer Hazarathaiah Gupta, B. Anjaneyulu of `Abhiruchi', a cultural outfit, P. Panduranga Rao, a former employee of All India Radio and fans from Visakhapatnam and other parts of the State paid their respects to the late Jandhyala.
