Sheila to take up pulses' price rise with Pawar

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Concerned over skyrocketing prices of essential commodities in the Capital over the past few weeks, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has decided to write to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar for taking appropriate steps to stem the price rise and provide relief to the common man.

Giving this information here, State Food and Supplies Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the matter came up for discussion in the Delhi Cabinet on Monday.

He said the Chief Minister while expressing concern over the rise in the prices of pulses over the past few weeks said she would take up the matter with Mr. Pawar.

It was felt that there had been a sharp rise in the prices of pulses and therefore Ms. Dikshit should seek Central intervention in the matter.

As for the increase in the price of vegetables, Mr. Chauhan said he was monitoring the situation daily and except for tomatoes the prices had been stable. Listing out the reasons for the increase in tomato prices, Mr. Chauhan said due to un-seasonal rains in the Sonepat-Panipat belt, the crop had been destroyed leading to shortage of the product in Delhi markets.

Similarly, he said the crop from Karnataka was also not arriving in adequate numbers leading to price rise. He informed that the daily consumption of tomatoes in Delhi stood at 500 tonnes, but only half that quantity was reaching the Capital.

The crop from Himachal Pradesh as well as other States will hit the markets next month and it was hoped that the prices of tomatoes would come down.
