PONDICHERRY: The State election authorities have accepted a total of 271 nominations, 130 by party sponsored nominees and 141 by Independents to contest the posts of councillors for the four out of five commune panchayats in Pondicherry. Of the five panchayats, the Villianoor panchayat would have poll in second phase on June 27 while the remaining four panchayats (Ariyankuppam, Bahoor, Mannadipet and Nettapakkam) would poll in the final phase on July 1. The District Election Officer Mr. G. Theva Needhi Dhas said on Monday that the nominations papers submitted by the candidates were found to be in order relating to all four commune panchayats which have a total strength of 53 councillor wards, They would be elected on party basis. 225 nominations were also accepted for election to village panchayat presidents in these commune panchayats and the total presidents posts are 53. The number of village panchayat wards, which would poll on July 1 in these four panchayats, is 337 and there are 1,457 contestants.
