Four killed, 56 injured as boat capsizes

Bus overtook a lorry and plunged into a ditch

KARAIKAL: Four youths were killed on the spot and 56 persons, including a dozen women, sustained injuries when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus proceeding from Nagapattinam to Chidambaram capsized at Keezhavanjur near T.R.Pattinam in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Pondicherry on Monday evening. Karaikal police sources said the accident occurred when the bus driver overtook a lorry and capsized after plunging into a ditch. Four youths — Murugan (25) of Nagapattinam, Chandrasekar (25) of Karuvi near Poompuhar, Azhagesan (16) of Vadapathimangalam and Vinod (28) of Neelappadi near Keevalur in Nagapattinam district, travelling near the footboard were crushed to death.

Fifty-six passengers sustained injuries of whom 16 were admitted to the Government hospital in Karaikal. T.R.Pattinam police have arrested Selvakumar (39) driver and Baskar (41), conductor and registered a case.

Tenkasi S.Jawahar, Nagapattinam Collector, on Tuesday, visited the Government Hospital at Karaikal and consoled the patients.
