Harikrishna holds Volokitin

NEW DELHI: P. Harikrishna battled his way to a marathon 90-move draw against Ukraine's Andrei Volokitin in the third round of the Aerosvit 2006 International Grandmasters chess tournament in Foros, Ukraine, on Monday.

Harikrishna's third successive draw raised his tally to 1.5 points in this 12-player league.

World junior champion Azerbaijan's Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Viorel Bologan posted victories to share the lead with 2.5 points.

The results (third round): Viorel Bologan (Mol, 2.5) bt Liviy-Dieter Nisipeanu (Rom, 1); Andrei Volokitin (Ukr, 2) drew with P. Harikrishna (Ind, 1.5); Sergei Rublevsky (Rus, 1.5) bt Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr, 0.5); Alexei Shirov (Esp, 2) bt Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 0.5); Alexander Areshchenko (Ukr, 1) lost to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 2.5); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 1.5) drew with Alexander Grischuk (Rus, 1.5).
