A popular American dance group that uses creativity as a means to communicate its message of positive life and clean living among Generation X will perform at Sri Sathya International Centre on Lodhi Road in the Capital on Wednesday. HaviKoro -- a Houston-based hip-hop dance group -- was established when a group of friends chose dance over negative activities such as drugs and violence in their neighbourhood. Comprising Richard Camargo, Amado Ramirez, Joel Martinez, Kirk Beecher and Jose Hernandez who acts as the disk jockey, the five-member group is known for its break dancing, popping and funk. The group has gained immense popularity since it was formed in 2000 and has performed with well-known artistes like Destiny's Child, Coolio and Black Eyed Peas. Sponsored by Span magazine, the flagship publication of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, and the American Information Resource Centre, this one-of-its-kind event is an attempt to share with young Indians the message of a clean life so that they steer clear of drugs. The group is on a three-nation tour to India, Turkey and Turkmenistan from June 20 to July 7. The group will also be performing at Centrestage Mall in neighbouring Noida, Sector 18, on Thursday. According to Span Editor-in-Chief Corina Sanders: "We are very excited about bringing popular American culture to India. HaviKoro will be a treat to watch and they promote a message of positive life choices which is very pertinent for the youth of today, whether they are here in India or in the U.S." Madhur Tankha
