Corrections and Clarifications

  • In "`We are trying to build an inclusive society'" (Op-Ed, June 17, 2006), an interview with M. Veerappa Moily, a reader disputes Mr. Moily's answer to a question. Mr. Moily had said: "... [The] Massachusetts Institute of Technology has 5,000 students on one campus. We do not have so many students in all our Indian Institutes of Technology put together." It is too low a figure, says the reader. While there are 15,500 undergraduate and 12,000 graduate students, in addition to research scholars, in the seven IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee), Mr. Moily's answer should be seen in the context of the intake of students post-JEE. This year, there were 3,980 entrants for the seven IITs.

  • A reader says that in "In praise of Citizen Kannagi" (Op-Ed, June 16, 2006), there are errors in quoting the lines from "the book of Madurai". In the first instance, the sentence "First it should be noted that the Sun had told Kannagi, `A raging fire will burn this city' (line 63, canto 18, the book of Madurai" should have been " ... line 63, canto 18, Silappathikaram" or "line 63, canto 8, the book of Madurai". In the second instance, Kannagi's quote, "Are there women here? ... , Are there women who would allow such vileness, To be done to their own husbands? ... , Are there good people here? ... , Is there a god here? (lines 67-73, canto 19, the book of Madurai)" should have been "... lines 67-73, canto 19, Silappathikaram", or "... lines 67-73, canto 9, the book of Madurai."

  • A reader points out that in the AP report "Congo President weds sweetheart" ("International", June 19, 2006), Kinshasa has been mentioned as the capital of Congo. Kinshasa is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
