Letters to the Editor
The ban and suspension of the release of the film The Da Vinci Code by State Governments are both unwarranted and undesirable. Are not regional films watched by many who cannot sift the chaff from the grain? Why then the hue and cry over a film that is likely to be watched only by discerning audiences? Pleasing a section of the population seems to be the reason for prohibiting its release.
A.S. Ratnam,
The so-called minority appeasement is not confined to our country. Every right thinking nation is mindful of protecting the religious sentiments of its minorities. The British Government not only stopped the exhibition of M.F. Husain paintings but also withdrew an apparently innocuous postage stamp, in deference to the wishes of Hindus.
Peace Dale,
The much ado about nothing by some news hungry people who try to grab the limelight at the slightest provocation to create an impression that they are a force to reckon with is unfortunate. The government should not cave in to such pressure.
Kenneth Clement,
It is regrettable that whenever religious sentiments are hurt people fail to see things in the right perspective. Had The Da Vinci Code been ignored, it would not have got the publicity it ultimately did. Whether it is the Satanic Verses or The Code, it should get no more attention than it deserves.
A. Mohamed Aslam,
