Upalokayukta orders probe into electrocution of woman

Staff Reporter

She was electrocuted after she came in contact with a live wire

BANGALORE: Taking note of a report on electrocution of an elderly woman in Murugeshapalya on Monday, Upalokayukta G. Patri Basavana Goud on Tuesday ordered an inquiry against the Managing Director of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited Gonal Bheemappa.

The inquiry will be conducted by the Lokayukta's Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).

The Upalokayukta's action relates to the incident wherein Krishnaveni, a construction labourer, was electrocuted after she came in contact with a live wire near her hut. She touched the live wire that had snapped during the rain thinking it to be a rope.

Mr. Goud has considered the news report as grievance against Mr. Bheemappa.

The TAC, Mr. Goud said, would not only look into negligence of BESCOM.

Coordination

It will also find out measures that BESCOM need to adopt for alerting snapping of electrical lines, especially during rains. The committee will coordinate with BESCOM authorities in finding the measures, he said. The report submitted by the TAC would be considered before he decides about investigating the case, he added.

This was the second time that the Upalokayukta has considered report of electrocution as grievance against Mr. Bheemappa and initiated action.

While ordering for an inquiry into the electrocution of an engineering student in Laggere on May 27, the Upalokayukta noted that he was empowered to take suo motu action against officers who were neither Secretaries to Government nor Group A officers as notified by the State Government. He has made note of this fact in the Tuesday's order too.
