Pravin Joshi fought for life for nine days

  • Joshi sustained 85 per cent burns in the self-immolation bid
  • Film was withdrawn from sole theatre showing it in Gujarat after the June 11 incident

JAMNAGAR: Pravin Joshi, who set himself afire in protest against the release of the controversial Aamir Khan starrer Fanaa at the Amber talkies here, died at the Guru Govind Singh hospital on Tuesday afternoon after battling for life for nine days.

Joshi, who hailed from Porbandar and was working in Rajkot, came to Jamnagar on June 11 and watched half the film the same day. During the interval, he went to the toilet, poured petrol on himself and set himself afire. By the time the theatre staff rushed him to hospital, Joshi had sustained more than 85 per cent burns.

The doctors in the hospital had given very little chance of his survival. Joshi died in the presence of his family members who had rushed from Porbandar and Rajkot. Following the self-immolation bid, the owners of the theatre withdrew the film from the theatre on June 12.
