KOLKATA: For the first time since its closure during the China-India conflict in 1962, the Nathula pass connecting the two countries was opened for a while on Tuesday to enable an Indian delegation that had gone to Lhasa last week to cross the border into Sikkim on its return. The delegation comprising five Central officials and one belonging to the Sikkim Government had held a meeting with Chinese officials in Lhasa on Sunday when it was agreed that trade between the two countries through the old Silk Route would be resumed on July 6. S.P. Subba, Director, Commerce and Industries, along with the State's Chief Secretary and other officials received the delegation. Later, Mr. Subba told The Hindu over telephone from Gangtok that officials of the delegation expressed satisfaction with preparations made for the resumption of border trade. A delegation of Chinese officials visited Nathula pass last year but did not travel through it then.
