NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that a general body meeting of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences be convened at the earliest to consider several important issues, including alleged interference by Union Minister of Health Anbumani Ramadoss. The BJP deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, V.K. Malhotra, who is chairman of the AIIMS Estimates Committee of Parliament, made this demand here on Tuesday when the Minister announced that he would be addressing a joint meeting of faculty and students of the AIIMS on Wednesday. Mr. Malhotra said that apart from the recent flare-up of differences between Mr. Ramadoss and AIIMS Director P. Venugopal, there were other issues such as the increase of user charges made earlier, doctors being asked to vacate hostels, and the move to cut salary of doctors for participating in the anti-reservation agitation. Decrying "interference" by the Minister, Mr. Malhotra wanted convening of the AIIMS general body and the governing body meetings. He denounced the inquiry ordered by the Government into the affairs of AIIMS as "useless" since the composition of the inquiry committee was such that it could only reflect the Minister's thinking.
