Directive shocks parties

Heavy expenditure incurred for local polls

  • Loss for opposition candidates lesser than ruling party candidates
  • Illicit liquor brewers have kept huge stocks for disposal

Rajahmundry: The High Court order to cancel the local body election process has sent shock waves among the contestants. Also, it caused heavy loss to them in terms of the expenditure incurred for nomination, election material and other sorts of campaign in East Godavari district.

The loss for candidates from the opposition is comparatively lesser than ruling party candidates and also there are variations for MPTC and ZPTCs. Those who are in the fray for MPP and ZP chairperson posts are on the verge of tears in the district.

Most of the MPTCs in the district have spent around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 80,000 in the last 10 days for their nomination and campaign.

    An unhappy lot

ZP Chairperson aspirants from Ravulapalem and Amalapuram Reddy Subrahmanyam (State Sarpanches Association general secretary) and Kudipudi Venkateswara Rao alias Babu (son of late Kudipudi Prabahakara Rao, Minister) contesting on Congress tickets as ZPTCs said that they were disappointed and are unhappy over the court order.

They are tight-lipped over the expenditure, but said that they have spent within the permissible limits of Election Commission.

Tuni rural ZPTC S. Krishnaveni of Congress said that it is unfortunate and she has spent more than the Election Commission guidelines had stipulated as leaders asked her to spend more .

However, the illicit liquor brewers were totally depressed with this development as they already kept huge stocks for disposal and had taken advances.
