HYDERABAD: Speakers at a workshop on "SMB revolution and the new roadmap for technology" stressed the need for the small and medium businesses to invest in Information Technology.

The speakers, including Computer Society of India Hyderabad chapter representative Ashok K. Agarwal, and Avaya Globalconnect vice-president (sales) Anil Nair, said that though the SMBs were expected to increase their IT spending marginally in the coming years, they were still sceptical on how IT would add value to their businesses.

    Using IT to the hilt

Information Technology has emerged as an enabler rather than a supporter of business processes and the companies need to leverage it for their improving their performance.

The workshop was organised by ACNielsen to create awareness among the SMBs about the cornucopia of possibilities that had been opened up for them and enabling them to deploy technology in an optimal manner.

Representatives from several leading firms including the Microsoft, Hewlett Packard and other companies attended the meeting.

    New network

Mr. Agarwal said that the emerging business opportunities were stressing the need for creation of new network that required new architecture and programming.

With artificial intelligence set to become the driver of growth in future, there was a need for scalability and flexibility of infrastructure to cater to the needs.

"There has to be a change in the rules in some fundamental manner," he said.
