HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation has posted a net profit of Rs. 95.48 crores in the first two months of fiscal 2006-07, against a loss of Rs. 5.97 crores in the corresponding period last year. Hike in diesel prices this month though will put RTC back by about Rs. 92 crores. An increase of one rupee in fuel prices means an additional expenditure of some Rs. 46 crores, considering it consumes 42 crore litres a year.
Occupancy ratio up
The corporation registered improvements in all operational parameters in the fiscal ended March 31, compared to the last. Occupancy ratio went up to 65 from 62 per cent, daily bus utilisation up from 332 to 335, operation of a total of 238.08 crore km from 232.49 crore km and a gross earnings of Rs. 3,199 crores from Rs. 2,949 crores. All this has been possible with optimal utilisation of resources and greater participation from the 1.17 lakh-strong workforce, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director M.V. Krishna Rao told The Hindu . Other factors that contributed to the progress include reduction of motor vehicle (MV Tax) from 12.5 per cent for rural operations and 10 per cent for urban services to 7 and 5 per cent respectively on a par with Karnataka. Cent per cent reimbursement of concessions amounting to Rs. 340 crores a year, as of the last year, too helped.
