Two naxals killed

in encounter

NALGONDA: Two Maoists, including a woman cadre, were killed in an alleged exchange of fire with a police party at Kasarajupally in Chandampet mandal on Tuesday evening.

Officer on Special Duty (OSD) A. Venkateswar Rao said the two bodies were found between Kasarajupalli and Pedda Munigal after the exchange of fire between the Maoists and special party police. Further details were awaited, he added.

It is reliably learnt that one of the slain naxals was Kasani Salamma alias Latha, 22, the deputy commander of the Krishna Patti dalam. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: R. Sridaran, Chief Operating Officer, L & T Infocity Ltd, has been adjudged `manager of the year' in the 33rd annual Hyderabad Management Association awards announced here on Tuesday.

The other award-winners are: D. Vidyasagar, MD, SEC Industries Pvt Ltd (entrepreneur), Anand Manne, MD, Polmon Instruments Pvt Ltd (small-scale entrepreneur), B. Ashok Reddy, executive vice-president, HR and corporate affairs, Infotech Enterprises Ltd (personnel manager), B.L. Maheshwari, Chairman, Centre for Organisation Development (lifetime achievement) and S. Sivakumar, HMA life member and CEO, ITC Ltd-IBD (member). Award for poets

KARIMNAGAR: The Cinare poems awards committee and the Sahithi Gauthami have invited applications from poets for the 17th State-level Cinare poems award-2006, which will be presented in August.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 along with a memento and a shawl. The last date for submitting entries for the award is July 15. The entries should reach E. Vijayender Reddy, convenor, Cinare poems award committee, Shivananda hospital, Karimnagar, according to a press note. - Staff Reporter

Maoists' action

condemned

HYDERABAD: State Committee of the CPI (ML New Democracy) has condemned opening of fire by Maoists three days ago at its activist Patan Khaja of Markod village in Khammam district resulting in his death later in hospital.

R. Subash Chandra Bose, secretary, in a statement here on Tuesday demanded open enquiry into the killing. - Special Correspondent

Tension at Nagarkurnool

MAHABUBNAGAR: Tension prevailed in the divisional headquarters town of Nagarkurnool for sometime when the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse agitating activists of TDP, Congress and CPI in front of the office of the revenue divisional officer.

There were heated exchanges between Nagarkurnool MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy and RDO Rahemuddin over acceptance of a nomination of Srinivas Reddy of CPI, who filed his nomination for MPTC seat from Veligonda. This resulted in dharnas by TDP, Congress and CPI activists. -Correspondent

Two electrocuted

GUNTUR: Two persons died on Monday night when a live wire fell on them after rain lashed the city.

According to the police, the dead were identified as Ch. Kodandam, 34, and his brother Ch. Subrahmanyam. - Staff Reporter

Trough of low

pressure over Bay

VISAKHAPATNAM: A trough of low pressure lies over west central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood on Tuesday morning, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here.

Under its influence, rain or thundershower is likely at many places over coastal Andhra Pradesh with isolated heavy falls during the next 48 hours.

Houses gutted

VISAKHAPATNAM: Seventy-two thatched houses have been gutted at Pedagolalapalem in Elamanchili mandal on Tuesday. The cause of the accident was not immediately known. The loss due to fire was estimated at about Rs.8 lakhs. The fire tenders, who reached the spot immediately from Elamanchili, put out the fire within few minutes. - Staff Reporter
