Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Veteran Tamil poet, Suradha, died here on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 84. He is survived by his wife and a son.
Suradha is a pseudonym of T. Rajagopal. He was an ardent follower of Bharatidasan, a renowned poet of yesteryear. Known for similes, he was called "Uvamai Kavignar" (poet of similes). Saavin Mutham (kiss of death) and Thenmazhai (rain of honey) were among his notable works. He also ran a weekly Kaavyam, entirely dedicated to poetry. He was a lyricist and a dialogue writer for several Tamil films. About 30 years ago, he received the Bharatidasan award.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Dravida Kazhagam president K. Veeramani were among those who visited the house of the poet and paid their respects.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko in his message said the death of Suradha was a great loss to Tamil literature.
