Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: Telugu Desam Party corporators of Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) found fault with the tardy progress of various sanitation and drinking water works undertaken by the GMC during the last few months. At a press conference here on Tuesday, TDP floor leader in the GMC Yaganti Durga Rao blamed the alleged irresponsible attitude and the lack of cooperation from the municipal authorities in effective implementation of works. "The sanitation is pathetic as garbage is piled up all over the city. The authorities did not finalise tenders related to sanitation for the past six months," he said.
Blind eye
The Mayor has turned a blind eye to the problems and group politics within the Congress was hindering the daily working of the corporation, he said. The leaders were also indulging in misuse of official machinery, Mr. Durga Rao alleged. He said that if the GMC authorities failed to take necessary action within a week, the TDP would launch an agitation with the involvement of the local people. All the other members belonging to the TDP were present.
`TDP jealous'
In the evening, it was time for the corporators belonging to the Congress to counter the allegations raised by the TDP. At a meeting held in the Mayor's chamber, Congress corporator Kasi Viswanatham said that the allegations arose out of jealousy. "The Congress party has done so much in just nine months, much more than the decade-long rule of the TDP. We are developing wards under Indiramma scheme, providing drinking water supply to all the localities and taken steps to avoid drinking water scarcity during summer. The corporation has not even deputed a single private water tanker additionally during the summer and managed just with the GMC's existing tankers. The TDP leaders are jealous of the welfare activities and are resorting to mud slinging," he said. He found fault with the floor leader for being double-tongued in praising Mayor on one hand and finding fault with him on the other. Other ward members belonging to the party were present. The TDP and Congress corporators paid tributes to Division 3 Abdul Aziz who expired on Monday following a prolonged illness. The TDP Corporator expired after suffering from kidney problem for six months.
