VIJAYAWADA: Frequent telephone calls from relatives and friends failed to console the family members of Vuppalapati Venkata Rama Raju, who was kidnapped late on Monday from the factory site of Nagarjuna Cements Limited near Kadimpothavaram of G. Konduru mandal. The telephone at his residence kept ringing on Tuesday morning. Fighting their emotions, the family members answered the calls with a hope that it might be from Mr. Raju.
Tiny house
"We do not know what happened exactly. A scrolling on a television channel said that Maoists had kidnapped him for a ransom," said Vijayalakshmi, wife of Mr. Rama Raju. Struck by gloom, their tiny house in Rama Raju Street was packed with anxious neighbours, relatives and friends. Repeated attempts to contact Mr. Rama Raju on his mobile phone failed, as the phone was switched off, they said. "The company's managing director called us in the morning and told us that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs. 1 crore. He said that the caller introduced himself as a member of Ramanna dalam," said Suryanarayana Raju, elder brother of Mr. Rama Raju.
