VIJAYAWADA: Bereaved relatives of a woman, who reportedly died during childbirth at the Government General Hospital in Hanumanpet, went berserk and damaged the windowpanes and notice boards near the hospital superintendent's office on Tuesday morning. Father of the deceased woman slashed his hands on the glass and his blood splattered all over the hospital. The hospital looked gruesome with splintered glass and blood splattered all over.

Devi, 23, of Gollapalem Gattu, was brought to the GGH in labour pains on Monday morning. Around 5.30 p.m., her relatives were told that the child was safe but the mother died due to excessive bleeding.

When relatives raised a hue and cry, two junior doctors told them that the woman was alive for about an hour after delivery. The relatives said when they refused to take the body, deputy superintendent of the hospital Rambabu allegedly frightened them, saying the body would be sent to "post-mortem and cut to pieces." The hospital authorities reportedly made a distant relative sign the forms, while the husband and other close relatives were waiting outside, the relatives said. On Tuesday morning, the relatives returned with activists of the All India Democratic Women's Association to find out the actual cause of death.

The superintendent told them that the woman died due to complications during childbirth. The relatives demanded that a case be registered against the doctors. However, resident medical officer G. Anjaneyulu said the patient developed fits soon after delivery. As a police case was lodged by the hospital authorities, the body was brought back to the GGH and was subjected to an autopsy.
