Tension at V. Madugula over tribal's death

VISAKHAPATNAM: Tension broke out in V. Madugula in the district on Tuesday following the alleged custodial death of G. Appa Rao, 48, a tribal.

Rao, a native of Konam village in Chidikada mandal, was arrested by an excise squad on the charge of selling illicit liquor on Monday. He was later shifted to the excise station at V. Madugula.

A sentry found him dead in front of the station in the morning and alerted the higher-ups. On hearing the information, several villagers rushed to the excise station and staged a dharna. However, the excise officials denied custodial torture as the cause of the death.
