Staff Reporter

Monsoon is expected to hit the Capital by early July

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday reviewed flood control measures in view of the approaching monsoon that is expected to hit the Capital by this month-end or early July. She directed all the agencies concerned to concentrate on vulnerable areas and pockets that are normally affected by floods.

The Chief Minister issued these directions at a meeting of the Apex Committee on Flood Control. Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia, Delhi Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, Industries Minister Mangat Ram Singhal, Chief Secretary R. Narainswamy and other senior officials from various departments attended the meeting. Ms. Dikshit also directed the Divisional Commissioner and the Municipal Commissioner to coordinate the flood control measures. The Divisional Commissioner would function as the nodal officer. A central flood control room has become operational in the office of the Deputy Commissioner (East). It will function round the clock up to October 15, issuing flood warnings and directions for evacuation, arranging necessary food and relief supplies and maintaining coordination with all concerned agencies.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department will also set up a separate control room. In addition, 25 other control rooms have been set up to streamline the functioning of flood control staff at the local level. In all, 101 pump sets including 75 portable diesel pump sets, 35 wireless sets, 50 boats, 471 life-jackets and several divers have been deployed.

To study the flood situation in the Yamuna, the water level reference at the Old Railway Bridge is taken. The warning level for the Yamuna is 204 metres and the danger level 204.83 metres. The highest flood level recorded so far was 207.49 metres in 1978.
