This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru left New Delhi on June 21 on a four-week visit to London, Europe and Washington. He was seen off at the Palam airport by the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Mr. U.N. Dhebar, Congress President, the Cabinet Ministers and members of the diplomatic corps. Mr. Nehru is accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, and his Principal Private Secretary, Mr. M.O. Mathai. The Prime Minister was profusely garlanded by the womenfolk present at Palam. Earlier, addressing a largely-attended public meeting at the Ramlila grounds, Mr. Nehru said the recent steps in Russia towards "liberalising the regime and relaxing internal restrictions" were bound to have far-reaching effect and improve the chances of world peace. He said that of late a voice had been raised in USSR against the old regime. Stalin, who was once recognised as a great leader, was being denounced. "I am nobody to make comments on what has been said about the old regime. But it seems the Russians have realised that they had been going on a wrong path. Now some steps have been taken towards peace and liberalising the regime, relaxing internal restrictions. This is a big development which must be taken note of by the world." He repeated his appeal to the US and the USSR to stop nuclear tests as these were proving most harmful and contaminating the atmosphere.
