dated June 22, 1956: Jobs in rural areas

The Union Home Minister, Pandit Pant, said in New Delhi on June 20 that it was absolutely essential that the millions in the villages, who were unemployed or underemployed, should find something to enable them to make ends meet. Inaugurating a conference of State Ministers and representatives of all-India boards dealing with cottage industries, he said that in the Second Five-Year Plan over Rs.200 crores had been provided for the development of village and small-scale industries as against the provision of Rs.38 crores in the First Plan. The necessary funds had thus been provided and now this would be the test for the States. Referring to the low standard of living in India compared to the scale of civilised nations, he said that in order to raise it the country had to produce more. It was essential to devise measures for increasing production.
