Banks in Thrissur register high credit disbursal

`Need to make schemes more beneficial to the poor'

THRISSUR: The banks in the district have won one of the top places in the State in disbursing credit during the last financial year.

An official release said here on Saturday that according to the figures released at the district-level banking review committee meeting, the banks had achieved 129 per cent of the targets set for credit disbursal in the last fiscal.

The banks disbursed loans to the tune of Rs.3,482 crores under different heads last year whereas the target set for the period was Rs.2,700 crores only. In the priority sector, the banks disbursed Rs.2,308 crores last year whereas the target was just Rs.1,790 crores. In the non-priority sector, the target set was Rs.910 crores while the actual disbursement was Rs.1,174 crores, the release said. In the agricultural and allied sectors, the banks disbursed Rs.775 crores as against a set target of Rs.774 crores. In the small-scale industries sector, the banks set a credit disbursal target of Rs.219 crores while the actual disbursal was Rs.279 crores.

This marks an achievement of 128 per cent in terms of target figures, whereas in the previous year the banks managed to disburse only 85 per cent of the target. The banks deployed a credit of Rs.1,252 crores in the other areas of priority sector, marking a 157 per cent achievement of the target figure of Rs.798 crores. District panchayat president K. Sreekumar who inaugurated the meeting said that even though the banks had improved their performance in terms of credit disbursal, they should make the schemes more beneficial to the poor sections of society. Additional District Magistrate P.M. Francis, Canara Bank Deputy General Manager Mohana Chandran and lead bank manager C. Raveendranath were among those who spoke on the occasion.
